Early Life
Desmond Ryan Bishop was born on 12th November 1975, in London, England, where he grew up alongside his brother Aidan, who is also a stand-up comedian like him. Des lost his father to cancer in 2011, and his mother after a long illness in 2019.
As far as education is concerned, Des is an educated man, who completed his schooling at St. Francis Preparatory School and joined St. Peter’s College at the age of 16. He obtained a degree in History and English from University College Cork.
Beginning of Career
Des Bishop became active in the Irish comedy scene in the late 1990s, when he started forming at the International Comedy Cellar, a well-known venue launched by comedians like Kevin Gildea, Barry Murphy, and Ardal O’Hanlon.
In 2002, Bishop landed a small role in the film In America, where he played the role of a stockbroker. In 2004, his popularity grew significantly after his show The Des Bishop Work Experience aired on RTE Two. Around the same time, he took on small jobs across Ireland and worked in places like the Aqua-dome in Tralee, Abrakebabra in Waterford, the Central Hotel in Dublin, and Superquinn in Dundalk.
In 2006, he appeared in another series called Joy in the Hood. That same year, he faced backlash after making offensive comments at an audience member and had to apologise for his behaviour.
Des is fluent in Mandarin and performs under the name Bi Hansheng on several Chinese dating shows. In 2017, he joined the first season of Ireland’s Dancing with the Stars, where he paired with Italian professional Giulia Dotta, but finished in eighth place overall.
