Early Life
Born on 10th December 1996 in Hillerslev, Denmark, Jonas comes from a very small fishing village with a population of merely 100 people. His family was modest and involved in fishing like most people in the village. His father, Claus Christian Rasmussen, was a fisher and a farmer, and his mother, Karina Vingegaard Rasmussen, was a homemaker. He also has one younger sister named Michelle Vingegaard Rasmussen.
He went to Hillerslev School and completed his 7th grade from there, and got admitted to Tingstrup School in Thisted to complete his 8th and 9th grades. He was equally inclined towards sports and participated in youth sports like handball and football before he discovered his love for cycling, which he realised when he attended a local stage of the Tour of Denmark with his father. When he was about 10 or 11 years old, he joined The Cykle Ring, a local cycling club.
He was way focused in cycling and chose to go to ISI Idrætsefterskole in Ikast, a sport boarding school where he also completed his 10th grade while focussing on cycling. Later, he went to Thisted Handelsgymnasium for his Higher Commercial Examination Programme and he very well managed his academics and cycling.
Beginning of Career
Jonas started cycling when he was 11 years old, and he began with his hometown in his local Cyckle Ring Club where he spent 5 years. In 2013, he transferred to Aalborg Cykle as he wanted to take cycling professionally, and he was already discovered. In 2014, in his final junior year, he showed his potential in cycling and got into the -23 field with the Odder Cykel Club, where he spent his entire 2015 and the first half of 2016.
He signed his first professional contract with ColoQuick-Cult in 2016 and spent his next 3 years gaining experience by participating in European and Asian races, where he displayed his extraordinary cycling skills. In 2019, he joined Jumbo-Visma and secured a place to participate in the Tour de Pologne, which he went on to win. The win opened an opportunity for him as he was eligible to compete at the WorldTour Level.
The 2021, he was sent as a replacement as the team leader Primož Roglič couldn’t participate, and he secured the second place at the Tour de France. He secured a win in the same competition and defended his title the next year by beating Pogačar by 7 minutes.
He suffered a severe crash in 2024, but made a comeback and secured a second place in the Tour de France in 2025, claiming his identity as one of the proficient cyclists. His winning also includes Critérium du Dauphiné, Tour of the Basque Country, Tirreno–Adriatico, and O Gran Camiño.
Shot to Fame
Jonas’s fame came unexpectedly when he was selected as a support rider, but instead was sent to compete at the Tour de France, but participated when the team leader Primož Roglič couldn’t make it. He came in the second position, and the very next year, he again came under the spotlight when he won the Tour de France.
Relationships
Jonas is not married but has been with his long-term partner Trine Marie Hansen, whom he met in his early phase of career phase. She has been his constant motivation and is often seen accompanying him in his races. The couple has a daughter, Frida, born in 2020.
