Netflix’s sci-fi drama “Away” captivated audiences with its portrayal of an international crew embarking on a daring three-year mission to Mars. However, despite a promising start, the show was canceled after its first season.

Sometimes, witnessing such abrupt cancellations, especially after one season, you are left there wondering what went wrong. While the cancellation has been pretty much confirmed by the fans, you can’t deny the fact that some fans are still hopeful about what’s to come.

We will take a look at all the details about Away Season 2, potential storylines, and details about returning characters.

When is Away Season 2 Releasing?

Unfortunately, due to the cancellation, there’s no official release date for Season 2. However, based on typical production timelines, it’s safe to assume it wouldn’t have arrived before late 2022 or even 2023. Keep in mind that these are mere speculations and not something to base your insights on.

Season 1 premiered in September 2020, and considering the visual effects and space travel elements involved, filming and post-production would likely have taken a significant amount of time.

Despite how well the first season did, it is quite disappointing that the fans couldn’t explore more of this fictional world due to the cancellation. Some of the fans, despite the official cancellation, have been curious to know if there are possibilities of a return sometime in the future. The possibilities look bleak at this point.

What can we expect from Away Season 2?

Season 1 is built towards the crew’s arrival on Mars.

Season 2, as hinted at by executive producer Jessica Goldberg, would have finally delivered the payoff: a full season dedicated to the Martian landscape. Here’s where things get exciting. The central question of “Away” has always been: is there life on Mars?

Season 2 could have explored this mystery in a big way. Imagine the crew conducting scientific experiments, searching for biosignatures, or even encountering fossilized microbial life. The psychological impact of such discoveries on the astronauts, far from home and loved ones, would have been a compelling narrative thread.

Beyond the scientific, Season 2 could have delved deeper into the interpersonal dynamics of the crew. Confined quarters, resource limitations, and the ever-present danger of the Martian environment would undoubtedly test their bonds. We could have seen leadership struggles, personal conflicts, and perhaps even romantic entanglements blossom under the harsh Martian sun.

The impact of Earth on the crew wouldn’t fade either. Communication delays would create a constant tension – how would they react to news from home, both positive and negative? Perhaps a global crisis on Earth would force the crew to choose between their mission and the fate of their loved ones.

Who is returning in Away Season 2?

To be fair, with how loved the characters from the first season were, it isn’t even a question that all of them would have returned if Season 2 were to happen. It would likely include:

  • Emma Green (Hilary Swank)
  • Misha Popov (Mark Ivanir)
  • Ram Arya (Ray Panthaki)
  • Lex Vargas (Josh Charles)
  • Katrine Lane (Tallie Medel)
