Early Life

Hector Camacho was born on 24th May 1962, in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, to his parents Maria Matias and Hector Luis Camacho Sr. He was a child when his family moved to New York City and grew up in the Spanish Harlem neighbourhood of Manhattan. 

As a teenager, Hector often got into trouble because of his habit of picking fights with people. Due to his behaviour and involvement in street fights, he even ended up in jail in his teenage years.

Guided by his English teacher, Pat Flannery, Hector learned karate and boxing. Flannery also encouraged him to participate in competitions, including Golden Gloves. This is how Hector fell in love with the sport, making it his career.

Beginning of Career

Hector Camacho started his professional journey at a young age. He won three Golden Gloves Championships, followed by Intercity Golden Gloves in 1980. Due to his excellent fighting style, it didn’t take him long to emerge as an exceptional talent. 

After an impressive amateur career, Hector quickly climbed the professional ranks. Being a confident boxer, he even could defeat world featherweight champions Eusebio Pedroza and Salvador Sanchez. However, before Hector could get the chance, Sanchez passed away.

Shot to Fame

Hector rose to fame in the mid-1980s. He won the WBC lightweight title in 1985, after defeating Jose Luis Ramirez in a power-packed performance. Over the next few years, he defended his title multiple times, which helped him solidify his status as a fighter.

One of Hector’s most memorable fights came in 1992 when he faced Julio Cesar Chavez in a junior welterweight match. Although he lost, the fight boosted his popularity.

Relationship

Hector Camacho was married to Amy Torres, with whom he had three sons. However, their marriage was not a happy one and ended in divorce. Hector also had four sons from a previous relationship.

Hector passed away on 24th November 2012, at the age of 50.  According to reports, he was shot while he was sitting in his car. The incident took place on 20th November on the Puerto Rico Highway. Four days later, he was taken off life support.
