Dhanteras is a festival that is celebrated by the Hindus. Every year Dhanteras falls on the first day of the five-day Diwali Festival. On this day, people mainly worship Lord Dhanvantari, Goddess Lakshmi, and Lord Kuberan along with the other gods.
Dhanteras is a Sanskrit word. ‘Dhan’ means wealth and ‘Teras’ denotes number 13. As it falls on the 13th Moon day of Krishna Paksha, it got this name. Dhanteras is also celebrated as Dhanvantari Jayanti, as Lord Dhanvantari, who is considered as the God of Medicine came out on this day carrying a jar of elixir.
People purchase expensive items like gold, silver, vehicles, utensils, properties, and other costly goods on this day to bring prosperity to their households. This day is considered as the day to worship the Goddess of wealth, Lakshmi. It is believed that both fortune and luck will attract people if they purchase the above-mentioned items on this day. There is also a list of items that you should not buy on this day.
