Early Life
Artimus Pyle was born Thomas Delmer Pyle on 15th July 1948, in Louisville, Kentucky to parents Clarence Pyle and Mildred Pyle. Growing up in a humble family, his father worked as a construction superintendent while his mother was a homemaker.
Before stepping into the world of music, Pyle served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He joined the army in 1968 and was discharged after three years in 1971.
Beginning of Career

Artimus Pyle joined Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1975 after Bob Burns, the band’s original drummer quit. His first album with the band was Nuthin’ Fancy, released in 1975. From there, he quickly became a vital part of the group and played on albums like Street Survivors, Gimme Back My Bullets, Legend, One More from the Road, and Southern by the Grace of God.
However, tragedy struck in 1977 when the band’s plane crashed, killing lead singer Ronnie Van Zant and other members. Fortunately, Pyle survived the crash and remained connected to Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Fast forward to 1987, Lynyrd Skynyrd reunited for a tribute tour, and Pyle was again behind the drums. He stayed with the band until 1991 and was inducted into the Hall of Fame along with his bandmates in 2006.
