Gene Winfield was born on 16th June 1927, in Springfield, Missouri. After two years of his birth, his family relocated to Modesto, California, where he grew up. In 1966, AMT hired Winfield to lead their Speed and Custom Division in Phoenix, Arizona. There, he built full-scale promotional cars, including one for Star Trek: The Original Series. After AMT shut down its custom division in 1971, Winfield continued his custom car work in Southern California.
