Born on April 23rd, 1934, in San Antonia, Texas, Vivian Dorraine Liberto was born into a family of Italian and American Descent. Her father, Thomas Peter Liberto, was of Sicilian descent, while her mother, Irene Robinson Liberto, was of American descent and came from a strong and devoted Catholic background. Her family’s inclination towards religion played a great role in her upbringing.
Her childhood days were spent in San Antonio, where she also attended a local Catholic school. However, nothing about her formal and higher education is available, but she was said to be a good student and was active in her community. While completing her education, she started working part time at the age of 17.
Her professional life is not a conventional one because she never worked, but she got into the limelight because of marrying Johnny Cash, a celebrated musical artist. Later, she authored a book, “I Walked the Line: My Life with Johnny,” in 2007, along with Anne Sharpsteen.
Her shot at fame came with her marriage to Johnny Cash.
Her relationship with Johnny Cash was the most tragic one. She met him at a roller rink in 1951, and they dated for about 3 weeks before Johnny was sent to Germany by the Air Force. They were later married on 7th August 1954 in her hometown, San Antonio, and the couple settled in Memphis, Tennessee, where he worked as a seller while working on his music career. Later, the couple moved to California in 1958.
The couple had 4 daughters together and continued living in California until their divorce. While being married to Johnny, people claimed her to be of black ethnicity and criticized her for lying about being of Italian-American descent. This left a mark on her identity, and she talked about it in her memoir.
The couple divorced in 1966 because of Johnny’s drug addiction and infidelity with the singer, June Carter, and later she married Dick Distin in 1968 and lived a quiet life in Ventura.
Vivian died at the age of 71 in 2005, after suffering a surgical complication for lung cancer. She passed away surrounded by the people she loved at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura.
