Early Life

Sultan Al Jaber was born on 31st August 1973 in Umm Al Quwain, United Arab Emirates and was named Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber. Apart from his father’s name, Ahmed bin Sultan Al Jaber, information about his parents and how he was raised is not available anywhere, and he has always preferred keeping his personal information private. He may have 2 brothers. Since the very beginning, he was an ambitious student and had an interest in energy and industry as a result of being raised in a time when the UAE was witnessing oil and infrastructure expansion.

He got a scholarship from Abu Dhabi National Company (ADNOC) that helped him to visit the US for his higher education. He completed his BSc in Chemical Engineering from the University of Southern California and later got his degree in MBA from California State University, Los Angeles, somewhere in the 2000s. He later pursued a PhD in Business and Economics at Coventry University in the UK and got his thesis on foreign direct investment.

Evolution of Career

Sultan Ahmed’s career began after he returned from the USA after completing his education, and he joined Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) as an engineer. During the late 1990s and early 2000s, he took up technical and commercial roles inside ADNOC and similar companies and gained experience in hydrocarbons and infrastructure. In 2006, he helped the team to found “Masdar,” which became Abu Dhabi’s flagship renewable energy company, and he became the CEO.

From 2006 to 2013, he led Masdar to become a high-profile international investor in renewables and worked in projects like Masdar City, making the UAE an important name in low-carbon energy. This he did while being the CEO of the energy platform at Mubadala and managing senior roles in Abu Dhabi’s sovereign investment ecosystem. In 2009, he was appointed to the Advisory Group on Energy and Climate Change (AGECC) by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon.

The same year, he played an important role in establishing the headquarters of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in Abu Dhabi. In 2010, he was appointed at the UAE’s Special Envoy for Climate Change and served the role from 2010 to 2016. In 2013, he entered the federal government as a Minister of State, taking up the responsibilities for economic and diplomatic works. By 2014, he became the Chairman of Masdar and expanded the company to more than 40 countries and setting a 100 GW renewable capacity target for 2030.

In 2016, a major breakthrough came when he was appointed as the Group CEO and Managing Director of ADNOC by an emirate decree. From 2016, he took ADNOC to transform completely and opened it to global investors and listed key subsidiaries like ADNOC Distribution’s IPO in 2017, and bagged an infrastructure deal of a US$4 $4billion midstream pipeline investment with BlackRock, followed by another deal of US$20.7 billion infrastructure transaction in 2019 with KKR. The latter was considered the biggest energy infrastructure deal in the world at that time.

His ministerial role started in 2020 when by was appointed as the UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and joined the UAE Federal Cabinet to manage the national strategy and technological advancements. The very same year, he was re-appointed Special Envoy for Climate Change, which he is still serving, and taking care of climate, energy and industry.

In 2023, he was named President-Designate of COP28 and became the first CEO of a major oil company to lead a UN climate COP at the UN Climate Conference. During 2023-2024, he led ADNOC’s New International Energy Investment Arm as the Executive Chairman of XRG. He invested tens of billions of dollars into chemicals, gas, and lower-carbon energies and help major stakes in LNG Projects and the acquisition of Covestro.

With 30 years of active career, Sultan Al Jaber continues to play the roles he was assigned and has contributed largely in shaping the renewable energy and climatic scenes of the UAE. Apart from these, he also serves several roles, including Chairman of Emirates Global Aluminium, Trustee of Mohammed Bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, and Board Member of Media and Diplomatic Institution.

There have been quite a few times when he came under the spotlight, both national and international. He first came under the spotlight when he became the founding CEO of Masdar and led the company to become the champion of large-scale investment in clean energy. His second moment to fame came when he was appointed as the Advisory Group on Energy and Climate Change (AGECC) by the UN Secretary-General Ban-Ki-Moon.

Another moment of dramatic fame came in the early 2010s as he was named UAE Special Envoy for Climate Change, which made him an important face at UN Climate Talks. After this, he continued to stay in the limelight with every ladder of success he climbed.
