The show was based on La Reina del Sur, which is a telenovela. It was again an adaptation of another book that was written by Arturo Perez Reverte and shared the same name as the telenovela.

The first season of the show dealt mainly with Teresa Mendoza and her rise to fame and power. Coming from a background of poverty, the woman gradually yet steadily rises to the position of the head of a drug cartel. This is a risky game. The next season follows how she makes her way through the various twists and turns that her profession poses before her as she tries to maintain and develop proper bonds with established personalities in the field.
The last season of the show ends on a rather dramatic note. As she keeps on losing more family members, Mendoza decides to fake her death. This serves as the only option for her to free herself from the shackles of the underworld.
This ending does not leave much scope for a possible season 6 to happen. The fans have to make peace with the decision that the production team has taken.
