Harsha Bhogle was born on 19th July 1961 in Hyderabad in a Marathi family and spent his majority of his childhood, from the 1960s to the 1970s, growing up there. His father, A.D Bhogle, was a professor of French, while his mother, Shalini Bhogle, was a professor of Psychology. With both his parents into academics, he too was raised into a highly academic ambiance. He was one of the 3 siblings and had an interest in cricket alongside being a great student.
He first went to Hyderabad Public School, Begumpet, in the 1970s, and then, in the late 1970s, he was admitted to Osmania University’s College of Technology and completed his degree in B. Tech in Chemical Engineering in 1982. He further went to IIM Ahmedabad to get his degree in Post Graduate Diploma in Management (MBA).
When he was just 19 and studying Chemical Engineering, he began cricket commentary for All India Radio (AIR) and mainly covered local matches. Post completing his B. Tech degree, he worked in advertising and later in sports management in the mid-1980s, but occasionally did AIR commentary for cricket whenever given the chance. During 1983- 1984, he was invited to do commentary for more national matches. Between 1991 to 1992, he became the first Indian commentator to be invited by the “Australian Broadcasting Corporation” (ABC) to join their radio team for India’s tour of Australia.
His peculiar and crisp way of commentary impressed the audience, and from the early 1990s, he became a regular on ABC Radio, BBC, and a few other broadcasters in India. After a while, he shifted to television and, through the mid-1990s, he worked for Star Sports and ESPN and covered matches from ICC events and bilateral series, and by the late 1990s, he had already become a renowned name in the world of cricket commentary.
Somewhere between 2001 to 2002, he became a permanent employee with ESPN Star Sports and started anchoring shows, post-match analysis, and pitch reports. His major contribution is well-recorded during the Cricket World Cup in 2003. During the 2000s, he became a regular name and did commentary and telecast alongside Ian Chappel, Richie Benaud, and Suni Gavaskar.
In 2008, with the launch of IPL, Harsha served as one of the prominent commentators and explained the new format of the game while adding his own humor and style. He continued with IPL commentary throughout the late 2000s and early 2010s. Harsha also has an alternative career as a writer, speaker, and columnist, and in between 1990s and 2000s, he wrote for magazines and newspapers. He also co-authored books like “Azhar: The Authorized Biography of Mohammad Azharuddin’ published in 1994, followed by “The Winning Way” with his wife, published in 2011.
In 2016, he took a shot break from BCCI sponsored commentary, but continued his association with foreign broadcasts and online shows, and soon returned to TV. During the late 2010 and 2020s, he appeared in plenty of YouTube shows, web series, and podcasts, including “Cricbuzz Live.” At present, he continues his commentary on cricket on TV and digital platforms.
Though he achieved major accomplishments in his commentary career, his major recognition came when he started to appear on ESPN and Star Sports and leaving the audience impressed with his amazing way of commentary and making the audience understand what is going on the pitch. He continued to stay relevant till today.
Harsh is married to Anita Bhogle, whom he met during his days in IIM, Ahmedabad, and the couple married in the mid-1980s; the exact date is not available anywhere. The couple has 2 sons.
