George Campbell Scott was born on 18th October 1927, in Wise, Virginia, to parents Helena Agnes and Gerald Dewey Scott. However, his mother passed away when he was just eight years old, and was raised by his father, who worked as an executive at that time.

Growing up in Detroit, Michigan, Scott was aspired to become a writer. But after high school, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps at the age of 17. After getting discharged from the military, he attended the University of Missouri and studied journalism and drama. During this time, his passion for acting grew and decided to pursue a career in theatre.

Beginning of Career

George C. Scott started his career in stage productions. In 1958, he made his Broadway debut in Comes a Day which helped him establish his reputation as a serious actor.  However, his breakthrough came with his performance in Richard III for the New York Shakespeare Festival.

After working in theatre, he shifted his attention to film and television. In 1959, Scott earned his first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Anatomy of a Murder. Over the next few years, he continued to take on complex roles, including Bert Gordon in The Hustler, for which he earned an Oscar nomination.

His other wives included Patricia Reed, Colleen Dewhurst, and Trish Van Devere, who remained with him until his death. Scott passed away in 1999, at the age of 71, due to a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm.
