Deccan Rice was born on 14th January, 1999 in Kingston upon Thames, Greater London, England and was raised there throughout the 2000s. His parents, Sean Rice and Teresa Rice, were of Irish descent but London-born and immigrated from Douglas, County Cork, to England. He spent his childhood and early teen years in South-West London along with his two brothers, and since childhood, he was invested in playing footfall, which his family also supported.
Rice went to Grey Court School in Ham, Richmond, during the early 2010s and later also joined Robert Clack School in Dagenham. In 2013, when he was 14 years old, he went to West Ham United’s Academy, where his professional football career started taking shape.
Rice’s football career started quietly, and he started playing locally. In 2006, he joined Chelsea Academy when he was merely 7 years old. He stayed with Chelsea till 2013, where he developed the majority of his football playing skills, and when he turned 14, he left the academy and was enrolled by West Ham United’s Academy the very same year. Here, he not only learnt skills, but also gained confidence.
By 2015, he became a part of West Ham’s under-18 and under-21 squads, and in 2016, he helped the team secure a win for the under-21s for the Premier League 2 Division 2 title. He made his senior debut for West Ham in 2017 in a Premier League Match against Burnley, and during 2017-18, he made over 30 league appearances, mainly as a holding midfielder and centre-back.
In 2018, he scored his first West Ham goal, and from 2018 to 2019, he became a key starter for the team. The same year, he shifted to the Republic of Ireland and played at the youth level and in three senior friendlies and was approved for FIFA in 2019. He debuted for playing for England in 2018 and by Euro 2020, which happened in 2021 because of COVID-19 and helped England reach the final.
Rice was appointed as West Ham Captain at a club level in 2022, and in the season of 2022-2023, he led the team to win the UEFA Europa Conference League by beating Fiorentina in the finals. In July 2023, he shifted to Arsenal from West Ham and was paid about £105 million, which made him one of the most expensive English players ever.
Soon after joining Arsenal and starting his session from 2023 to 2024, he became the central figure in Mikel Arteta’s midfield. As of now, he continues to play as a midfielder for Arsenal in the Premier League, as well as playing for the England National Team.
Rice’s breakthrough moment came when he became the captain of West Ham in the 2022-2023 season and helped the team secure a win at the UEFA Europa Conference League in 2023. His peak fame came when he became the most expensive English player with a bid of £105 million from Arsenal, giving him international exposure.
Declan has been in a long-term relationship with Lauren Flyer, whom he was dating when he was a teenager. While there is no confirmation about them being married, but the couple was blessed with a son, named Jude, on 7th August, 2022.
