By the time, he turned 15, Dillon started giving stage performances. One of his very first performances as a singer was on Jim Clayton Startime. After graduating from Oak Ridge High School, he made the bold decision to move to Nashville and pursue a music career.
Initially, Dillon recorded music under the name Dean Rutherford for the Plantation label but later switched to the name Dean Dalton. When he later signed with RCA Records, he was advised to change his stage name once again. The name “Dillon” was chosen by Jerry Bradley, a record executive at RCA Records.
Dean Dillon’s professional journey began in the mid-1970s when he moved to Nashville. Like many aspiring musicians, he struggled to secure an opportunity and performed at local clubs. His big break came when he signed a deal with RCA Records in 1979.

Aside from Strait, Dillon wrote songs for other artists like George Jones, Kenny Chesney, and Toby Keith. His song writing credits include classics like Tennessee Whiskey and many more.
