Early Life

Clayton Holmes Aiken, popularly known as Clay Aiken was born on 30th November 1978, in Raleigh, North Carolina. His parents were Vernon Grissom and Faye Aiken. Growing up, Clay had a difficult childhood, mainly because of his abusive father and his parents’ divorce. However, despite these difficulties, Clay found peace in music and performing, which became a significant part of his life from an early age.

He was passionate about singing from a young age and participated in his school plays, church choirs, and local theatre. After high school, he joined a local band called Just by Chance and hosted shows in Dunn, North Carolina. He attended Leesville Road High School and later the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where he pursued special education. He also enrolled for courses at Campbell University, which was before joining the University of North Carolina. 

His experience working with autistic children inspired him to become a special education teacher. He was assisted by the mother of an autistic child to audition for American Idol, which changed his life completely. Despite the show’s demands, he completed his special education degree in December 2003.

Career

Clay Aiken’s career took a major turn when he auditioned for the second season of American Idol in 2003. With his amazing voice and boy-next-door charm, he easily impressed the judges. Even though he finished as the runner-up, his time on the show catapulted him to overnight fame and success. With his exceptional singing talent, he became one of the most memorable contestants in the show’s history.

After American Idol, Clay signed a recording contract with RCA Records and released his debut album, Measure of a Man in October 2003. The album turned out to be a major success, debuting at no.1 on the Billboard 200 chart. He released a few more albums, including On My Way Here, Merry Christmas with Love, and A Thousand Different Ways, all of which were commercial success.

Outside music, Clay appeared in various television shows and specials, which further added to his success. He has also been involved in humanitarian efforts. In 2003, he founded the National Inclusion Project, an organization that promotes the inclusion of children with disabilities in all aspects of life. His career took yet another turn in 2014 when he announced his candidacy for the U.S. House of Representatives in North Carolina’s 2nd congressional district.
