China Mac was born on 5th February 1981, in Brooklyn, New York, to Chinese immigrant parents from Hong Kong. Growing up in a group home, Mac had a challenging childhood.
While there are not many details available about his mother, his father was a member of the Flying Dragons, a notorious gang that was active in the 1980s. Due to his father’s absence and his mother’s demanding work life, Mac spent much of his early years without parental guidance.
By the age of 12, Mac joined a Chinese-American street gang Ghost Shadows that exposed him to a life of crime, including robberies and drug dealing.
Mac’s involvement with the Ghost Shadows got him arrested multiple times for assault, robbery, and other crimes.
Despite the hurdles, he didn’t let go of his passion for rap. While serving time in juvenile detention centers, he engaged in rap battles and worked on his skills to become a better rapper. It was during his time in prison he adopted the moniker “China Mac,” a name given to him by fellow inmates.
After his release from prison in 2017, Mac focused on rebuilding his career and becoming a rapper. This led him to start his YouTube channel China Mac TV, where he shared videos of his food series, Mac Eats.
That same year, he dropped his album MITM. The following year, he gained attention for calling out rapper Lil Pump over his song Butterfly Doors, which featured offensive racial slurs against the Asian community.
In 2019, Mac dropped a dual EP titled Yin and Yang and also collaborated with artist Tali Goya to produce a Chinese-Spanish fusion track.
Outside his music career, China Mac is an activist against anti-Asian hate crimes. He turned his activism into music in 2020, the year he released the single They Can’t Burn Us All.
Although China Mac is a prominent figure in the rap scene, details about his personal life are private. There’s very little information available about his current relationship status. Some sources claim he is single while others state he is in a relationship. It’s hard to tell what is true unless the rapper confirms it himself.
