Charles Quinton Murphy was born on July 12, 1959, in Brooklyn, New York. Growing up in a creative family, Charlie and Eddie were raised by their mother, Lillian, after their parents’ separation. To ensure a good life for her children, Charles’ mother worked as a telephone operator, while their father, Charles Edward Murphy, was a police officer who also dabbled in stand-up comedy.

When Charlie and Eddie were quite young, that’s when they lost their father, leaving their mother to raise the two boys by herself. Soon after, Charlie’s mother remarried and their stepfather, Vernon Lynch, stepped up.
