He earned a bachelor’s degree in biblical studies from Wheaton College and later completed his master’s degree in Christian education. In 2004, he obtained a Ph. D. in biblical studies from Louisiana Baptist University.
After completing his master’s in 1961, Gothard established Campus Teams, which was later renamed the Institute in Basic Youth Conflicts (IBYC) in 1974. Fast forward to 1989, he again changed the name to the Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP). He served as a board member and president of IBLP until 2014, the year of his resignation.
Gothard also launched a home-schooling program called the Advanced Training Institute (ATI) in 1984. It featured a curriculum that was inspired by the Sermon on the Mount. Besides that, he formed strong political connections with Republican leaders like Sarah Palin, Mike Huckabee, and Sonny Perdue.
Throughout his career, Gothard focused on spreading his teachings to millions of people worldwide. It not only influenced Christian conservative groups but also well-known families like the Duggar family from reality TV.
