His family has Cuban roots, and his grandparents migrated to the USA.

In 2003, Almirola was appointed as one of the original members of Joe Gibbs Racing’s Driver Diversity Program, where initially, he raced in late model events. He got his first big NASCAR in the Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series in 2005, merely age of 21. He not only made four starts in the first year but scored two top 10 finishes while being associated with Joe Gibbs Racing. In 2006, he entered the NASCAR Xfinity Series and made 9 starts.

He found his success in the Truck Series, finishing second in 2010, which established him as a full-time Cup ride with Richard Petty Motorsports in 2012. He kept on going and secured his very first victory in the 2014 Coke Zero 400. In 2018, his career witnessed a huge jump when he won the Talladega payoff race, followed with victory in New Hampshire in 2021.

He announced his retirement in 2023 and returned to Joe Gibbs Racing in 2024 as a part-time Xfinity and, won at Martinsville in 2024 and Phoenix in 2025.
