5 Things that happen to you if you Eat too Much Cheese

If you eat cheese in moderation you will be able to acquire essential nutrients such as protein, calcium, phosphorous, vitamin B12, niacin and vitamin A. But if you overdo it, your body could suffer the following negative consequences.

It is not surprising that cheese makes you crazy: there are several scientific studies that compare its addictive nature with that of drugs. The one responsible for releasing endorphins in a clean stream is a protein called casein that has effects similar to those of opiates during digestion. However, not all cheeses are equally healthy: the healthiest are the organic versions of ricotta, mozzarella, feta, or Swiss cheeses such as Emmental or gruyere.

Properly measured and consumed in moderation, cheeses can prevent osteoporosis, benefit your dental health, provide you with protein, healthy fats and other nutrients such as vitamin B12, help you build muscle or benefit your immune system. If you go over, these are some negative consequences for your body.

  • Weight gain:  As several studies such as this one carried out in 2016 reveal, eating a lot of cheese in large quantities or in combination with unhealthy foods promotes fattening. Its consumption is associated with high fat and low fibre foods such as cookies, chips, pizza dough, low fibre bread or white pasta.
  • Stomach problems and constipation: Abusing these dairy products is associated with an increased risk of stomach problems, such as gas and bloating, especially for those who may be lactose intolerant. It is important to pay attention to symptoms such as abdominal pain, flatulence and bloating. Lacking fibre, if you do not complete your diet with this nutrient, you may suffer constipation.
  • Increased risk of heart disease: Although cheese can be part of a healthy diet when eaten in moderation, eating large portions of cheese frequently, especially those high in saturated fat, can increase your risk of heart disease, especially if you have previous pathologies or a family history of high cholesterol. Saturated fats should never exceed a maximum of 10% of daily calories.
  • High sodium intake: People with high blood pressure should keep their sodium intake at 2,400 milligrams per day or less. Soft and Swiss cheeses are lower in salt than harder and harder cheeses. 
  • Raises the risk of various types of cancer:  The United States Committee of Physicians for Responsible Medicine has requested that high-fat cheese carry a warning label for breast cancer risk since it contains traces of reproductive hormones. A study funded by the  United States National Cancer Institute and conducted by the Roswell Park Cancer Institute concluded that women who consumed a higher amount of high-fat dairy products experience up to a 53% increased risk of breast cancer.
